Mental health advocates slam inhumane Slater Hospital discharges

CRANSTON  The continuing discharges of Eleanor Slater Hospital patients, many to circumstances relatives and guardians describe as inadequate for their needs, is drawing mounting criticism from disability and mental-health advocates and highlighting, yet again, long-standing deficiencies in a state system that decades ago was hailed as a national leader. “The state has not invested in the full continuum of behavioral health care, and we are left with a dilapidated, broken, insufficient system,” Laurie-Marie Pisciotta, executive director of the Mental Health Association of Rhode Island, said on Monday in calling for a moratorium on disputed patient discharges. “The system really needs a redesign from the bottom up, carefully ensuring adequate resources to meet the needs people have now,” James McNulty, executive director of Providence-based Oasis Wellness & Recovery Centers, told The Journal.

Dr. Star Hampton, the first to fill the newly created position, was named to the role this month. Her new responsibilities will include acting as a liaison for undergraduate and graduate medical education across the Care New England Health System, developing consistency across Care New England’s academic programs, and developing goals and priorities relating to education.

In the backdrop, Lifespan is in the midst of a mega-merger with Care New England worth upwards of more than a billion dollars.   Lifespan CEO Tim Babineau is oaid more than $2M Management Bonuses As GoLocal reported in October, Lifespan gave out “special management compensation” bonuses to top execs after reportedly receiving more than a hundred million dollars in federal CARES Act funds during the coronavirus pandemic.  Lifespan  which refused to say just how much CARES Act funding they have received to date  defended the bonuses.
