The project will create 200 apartments for senior veterans, an adult day healthcare center, a career training and education center and a medical lab. The $70 million project also plans to build beds for veterans participating in the career training program. The hospital building will be renovated with work starting this year. Construction on the 390,000-square-foot campus is expected to end in 2023. Care New England, which owns other hospitals in the area, closed the Memorial Hospital in 2018 citing low inpatient rates. A report found the closure meant nearby communities had less access to care and that it increased pressure on other area hospitals.
