5 Shreveport priests who died in epidemic on track to sainthood

Shreveport Times Five Roman Catholic priests who died in Shreveport during the yellow fever epidemic of 1873 have been recognized as Servants of God, the first step in the process toward being recognized as a saint. The Vatican s Congregation for the Causes of the Saints has reviewed their stories and has granted the Diocese of Shreveport permission to begin the process of gathering evidence of the sanctity of the lives and the cult of devotion to Father Jean Pierre, Father Isidore A. Quemerais, Father Jean-Marie Biler, Father Louis Gergaud and Father Francois LeVezouet. There has never been any sainthood cause from northern Louisiana.

As I See It: The Capps Motor Co

I am doing things a little bit differently this week, as all three of my historic pictures will be part of the story of one of Bandon s oldest businesses, the Capps Motor Co. The first picture shows Capps Garage before the fire of 1936. It is the building on the east side of Oregon Avenue, which was the main highway into town in those days. Today it leads down the hill past Holy Trinity Catholic Church and joins First Street across from the Port of Bandon s marketplace building. If you look closely you can see the overhang which covered the gasoline tanks in front of the big concrete two-story structure. West of Capps Garage is The Golden Rule, which after the fire relocated on Second Street in the building that is now the Continuum Center.
