3 Mount St. Mary Academy seniors receive diocesan awards
Updated Jan 28, 2021;
On Tuesday, Jan. 26, three seniors from Mount Saint Mary Academy were honored during a virtual ceremony held by the Diocese of Metuchen.
The St. Timothy Award was granted to Jaclyn Dencker of Westfield, Katherine Kwiatkowski of Metuchen, and Tara Schilke of Pittstown. Kwiatkowski also received the diocese’s St. Teresa of Calcutta Award.
The awards were presented by Megan Vantslot, director of the Diocese of Metuchen’s Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, and Bishop James F. Checchio.
According to Vantslot, the St. Timothy Award recognizes high school-aged youth who “live as disciples of Jesus Christ, demonstrate Gospel values, witness to their faith by exhibiting Catholic morals and integrity, and reflect Christian leadership in a variety of settings.”

Religious leaders across the Advertiser area have delivered Christmas messages to our readers:
There have been plenty of suggestions about cancelling 2020 and maybe there are a fair few who would like to skip Christmas this year. But we need Christmas because we need hope over fear,
writes the Right Rev Paul Williams, Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham.
On many occasions in the Christmas story people are told not to be afraid Ââ Mary first, then Joseph, as well as shepherds on a hillside near Bethlehem.

Auxiliary Bishop Michael William Fisher will begin in Buffalo in January.
The Rev. Daniel Walsh at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Dunkirk said he is looking forward to the appointment of a new bishop in the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo.
Washington, D.C., auxiliary Bishop Michael William Fisher was recently appointed by Pope Francis as the 15th bishop of the diocese in an announcement from the Vatican.
“I think his last name alone is a good sign Jesus called the apostles to be fishers of men and women, so that’s a great play on words there,” he said. “We will have to wait and see how he does, but I am very excited and hopeful he will do well.”
