The Vermont State Police is investigating an apparent fatal shooting in the town of Newbury. The suspect was taken into custody peacefully early Tuesday morning, May 4, 2021, following a standoff and is expected to be charged with murder.
The suspect is 70-year-old James Perry Jr of Newbury. The victim in this incident is identified as Karina Rheaume, 38, of Newbury, the daughter of the suspect in her death.
An autopsy was performed Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington on victim Karina Rheaume.
The cause of death was determined to be shotgun wounds of the head and torso, and the manner of death is homicide.

Vermont Business Magazine Investigators with the Vermont State Police and the St Johnsbury Police Department on Tuesday concluded processing the scene on Railroad Street in St Johnsbury where Johnnie Simpson was found unresponsive last Friday.
Detectives are awaiting a final determination from the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington on the cause and manner of Mr. Simpson’s death. This is pending toxicology testing, which could take several weeks.

Vermont State Police Following further investigation, the Vermont State Police has arrested Victoria Griffin, 29, of Randolph on suspicion of second-degree murder related to a stabbing that occurred Saturday, Dec. 12, 2020.
The victim is identified as Concepcion Cruz, 44, of Randolph. Cruz and Griffin were in a relationship and lived in the Park Street home where the incident occurred. Four children related to Cruz and Griffin between the ages of 12 and 16 were in the home when the stabbing took place. They were uninjured and are now in the care of relatives.
An autopsy Sunday, Dec. 13, at the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Burlington determined the cause of Cruz’s death was a stab wound to the upper torso, and the manner of death was homicide.

Almost three weeks after a Holyoke, Massachusetts, man was found dead of a gunshot wound inside a room at the Quality Inn in Rutland, investigators have revealed little new information about the death but say they are still actively investigating.
Jonathon Houghton, 35, of Holyoke, was identified Nov. 23 as the victim of the shooting. Houghtonâs body was found Nov. 22.
The Chief Medical Examinerâs Office in Burlington conducted an autopsy and determined Houghtonâs cause of death was a gunshot wound to the torso and the manner of death was homicide.
On Friday, Rutland City Police Department Chief Brian Kilcullen said he could only comment that the death was under active investigation by law-enforcement officers.
