First-ever sclerotinia-tolerant OSR could help cut costs

First-ever sclerotinia-tolerant OSR could help cut costs >More in © Tim Scrivener Oilseed rape growers may be able to save money and miss out on a fungicide flowering spray by drilling the first ever variety with tolerance to stem rot disease sclerotinia. The new breakthrough high-yielding hybrid variety PT303 comes from breeder Pioneer, which is part of the agrochemicals and seeds giant Corteva Agriscience, and “significant quantities” of seed will be available this summer. Although the multi-gene trait does not give 100% resistance to the yield-sapping disease, the group describes it as a “major milestone” for plant breeders as it could reduce spraying of the tall crop or even cut out flowering sprays altogether.

Why yellow rust ratings changed for some varieties in 2021

Why yellow rust ratings changed for some varieties in 2021 >More in © Tim Scrivener An online early warning system and a revamp of variety yellow rust resistance ratings have been introduced for 2021 to help wheat growers tackle an increasingly diverse pathogen. With the risk of yellow rust increasing every year as the disease evolves, the new measures should help to reduce the discrepancies that have been seen in the field in recent years and provide better discrimination between varieties. As previously reported in Farmers Weekly, unexpected disease outbreaks on varieties considered to be resistant have been a feature of the past two seasons, with new yellow rust races emerging sporadically and often having a random distribution – leading to localised infections and differences within areas.

Why farmers need to carefully monitor yellow rust in wheat

Why farmers need to carefully monitor yellow rust in wheat >More in The surge in yellow rust is becoming a bigger challenge for agronomists and farmers. The disease takes its name from the highly visible parallel lines of yellow-orange pustules that are produced along the leaves of adult plants. New races of the pathogen and unexpected infections on previously resistant varieties have caused well-documented control difficulties in the field, with growers being warned to “expect the unexpected” from such a highly diverse pathogen. As a result, the way that variety resistance ratings for yellow rust are calculated has been changed this year, with greater emphasis being given to the most recent results.

Yellow rust battle in wheat crops set to get tougher

Yellow rust battle in wheat crops set to get tougher >More in © David Jones/MAG Wheat growers face a tougher battle against yellow rust this spring due to many races of the disease being suspected within crops and a key rust fungicide being banned. Crop experts say that there are clearly more races of the disease than have been already identified, and yellow rust was seen in some winter wheat crop well before Christmas. In addition, sales of one of most effective fungicides against yellow rust – the azole epoxiconazole – are now banned, making control more difficult of a disease which can cut wheat yields in half in a bad year.
