The new breakthrough high-yielding hybrid variety PT303 comes from breeder Pioneer, which is part of the agrochemicals and seeds giant Corteva Agriscience, and “significant quantities” of seed will be available this summer. Although the multi-gene trait does not give 100% resistance to the yield-sapping disease, the group describes it as a “major milestone” for plant breeders as it could reduce spraying of the tall crop or even cut out flowering sprays altogether.

With the risk of yellow rust increasing every year as the disease evolves, the new measures should help to reduce the discrepancies that have been seen in the field in recent years and provide better discrimination between varieties. As previously reported in Farmers Weekly, unexpected disease outbreaks on varieties considered to be resistant have been a feature of the past two seasons, with new yellow rust races emerging sporadically and often having a random distribution – leading to localised infections and differences within areas.

Crop experts say that there are clearly more races of the disease than have been already identified, and yellow rust was seen in some winter wheat crop well before Christmas. In addition, sales of one of most effective fungicides against yellow rust – the azole epoxiconazole – are now banned, making control more difficult of a disease which can cut wheat yields in half in a bad year.
