A Zimbabwean man (33) suspect is expected to appear in the Kempton Park regional court Monday after being arrested at the OR Tambo International Airport in South Africa with 23 pieces of gold worth an estimated R11m in his luggage.
The Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team made the arrest on Saturday, after the man, who was travelling from Zimbabwe, was requested to scan his luggage at the SA Revenue Service’s custom section at international arrivals, police said in a statement.
“He allegedly failed to declare any items and did not have any permits or licences to be in possession or transport gold and the Hawks were called to effect the arrest and conduct further investigation.”
A Fidelity security guard (45) will appear at Kempton Park Magistrates Court for theft of several million rands on Monday, 10 May 2021.
The suspect was part of the three-man crew that started their daily duties with all drop-offs and pickups from the ATM’S around Selby, Johannesburg on 5 April 2021. They returned to the company base at Edenvale with the remaining money.
One guard was dropped outside the entrance, the driver proceeded to park the armored vehicle inside. The third crewman allegedly loaded the money bag in his private vehicle, left the premises without being searched, and never returned to work.
A case of theft was reported to the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation team that traced and arrested the suspect on Saturday. His vehicle that was allegedly used in the commission of the crime was also seized.

A security guard, who allegedly fled with millions of rands belonging to his employer, is expected back in court again this week.
Josiah Marietta Lekgoathi, 45, allegedly stole the money after completing his daily duties on 5 April.
He allegedly loaded the money into his private vehicle and disappeared.

Lekgoathi faces a charge of theft.
It is alleged that on 5 April, Lekgoathi was on duty with his two other colleagues conducting money drop-offs and pickups from various ATMs around Selby, Johannesburg.

Hawks arrest two bogus Eskom ‘employees’ for illegally installing electricity
Two men accused of stealing Eskom property and tampering with infrastructure appeared in the Kwaggafontein Magistrate s Court on 7 May.
The Hawks Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit in Mpumalanga arrested two men for allegedly stealing Eskom equipment and installing electricity illegally.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi said they received a tip-off about the accused claiming to work at Eskom and in Kwaggafontein.
