A B.C. school district is apologizing for a question that appeared on an exam asking students to give examples of how First Nations people may have benefitted from their relationships with colonizers.
The superintendent of the Burnaby School District has issued an apology after a question on a Grade 9 social studies test asked students to describe how First Nations people benefited and took advantage of their relationship with colonizers.
But from those shared experiences also comes solidarity, she says. The students expressed a sense of belonging, the sense of seeing themselves in each other and in the room, says Applewhite.
