The country was controlled by the armed forces until they began to cede power a little more than 10 years ago.
“The military has always operated in an opaque way,” said Al Jazeera’s Florence Looi, who has reported extensively from Myanmar. “It has in many ways considered itself above the law.”

Joe Biden threatened to impose fresh sanctions on Myanmar on Monday, after a military coup put the country s elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest once again.
The coup, led by General Min Aung Hlaing, derailed years of Western-backed efforts to establish democracy in Myanmar after five decades of military rule ended with much international fanfare in a 2015 election that propelled Ms Suu Kyi, a former political prisoner, to power.
