The new law requiring all Iowa schools to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in class is now in effect, local school officials and students have offered mostly apathetic responses to the new rule.
With the law going into effect July 1, Burlington summer school students have been among the first in the state to participate.
Under House File 847, which was passed and signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds in May, Iowa schools are required to display the American flag in classrooms and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Student are not required to participate if they or their parents don t want them to.
