Pledge of Allegiance requirement law beginning in Burlington schools

The Hawk Eye The new law requiring all Iowa schools to recite the Pledge of Allegiance in class is now in effect, local school officials and students have offered mostly apathetic responses to the new rule.  With the law going into effect July 1, Burlington summer school students have been among the first in the state to participate.   Under House File 847, which was passed and signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds in May, Iowa schools are required to display the American flag in classrooms and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. Student are not required to participate if they or their parents don t want them to.   

Burlington officials await federal stimulus money spending guidance

It s too early to know how local entities can use their latest federal stimulus money. Des Moines County Board of Supervisors Chairman Tom Broeker stressed that message at a forum Friday, saying there hasn t been any guidance yet on the scope of local spending. Broeker was the only elected official to speak at the Greater Burlington Partnership s Eggs and Issues forum, at which representatives from the county, cities and school districts of Burlington and West Burlington were asked to share their plans for money received from the American Relief Plan Act.  We don t expect clarification until after the arrival (of the money), Broeker told the forum s virtual attendees.
