Hopeful outcomes Christer Watson The pandemic in the U.S. appears to be in the end stages. Vaccines are widely available to adults and older children and appear to be working wonderfully. As we all look forward to the fall beginning of school, however, we need to be thinking ahead. Specifically, how will the virus spread when adults are vaccinated but children are not? As has been true this entire pandemic, our knowledge is improving, but not complete. An important step was a recently announced study in the town of Serrana in Brazil. The study was led by scientists from the Butantan Institute in Sao Paulo.

Local first graders book wins honor ASHLEY SLOBODA | The Journal Gazette Efforts by a Cedarville Elementary School teacher to build confidence in her first graders culminated with a prize in a nationwide contest rewarding student-authored books. Studentreasures Publishing honored “Super Special Me!” by Karen Augustine s class as a Top 50 book in the 2020-21 National Book Challenge, according to a news release. The contest was open to more than 60,290 books submitted to Studentreasures for free publishing this past academic year, the release said. Finalists were selected based on originality, storyline and illustrations. Augustine described their book as a precious keepsake. The students were inspired by how they see themselves and what they want to be when they grow up, the release said.

Indianapolis-based Mina Starsiak Hawk, cofounder of Two Chicks and a Hammer and host of the HGTV series “Good Bones,” will be the keynote speaker for Tapestry 2021, scheduled for Sept. 17 at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Attendee ticket sales begin on July 12 at 8 am. Purdue University Fort Wayne and Parkview Health are co-founders of this annual community event celebrating women. Since 2002, Tapestry has raised over $1 million in scholarships. Hawk’s story is one of determination, family and community. Hawk and her mother, Karen Laine, created a home renovation company in Indianapolis in 2007. Their goal was to revitalize neighborhoods in the Circle City, one house at a time. In 2014, the duo appeared in a pilot project for HGTV, “Two Chicks and a Hammer,” and in 2015, the network picked up the series with a new title, “Good Bones.”
