Activities are underway to mark Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month, set aside each year to call attention to the neurodegenerative disorder estimated to affect almost 1 million U.S. residents.
Patients, caregivers, family, and friends nationwide are running fundraisers, learning how to become activists, participating in educational and community discussions, and flooding social media platforms all to heighten awareness of multiple sclerosis (MS) among the general public, as well as to draw the attention of policymakers, public authorities, industry representatives, scientists, and health professionals.

In some cases, the disease slowly worsens over time, and doctors call this condition primary progressive MS. Other people experience âattacks,â or exacerbations, during which symptoms become worse or new symptoms appear. This is known as relapsing-remitting MS.
For some people, relapsing-remitting MS gradually worsens. The name for this condition is secondary progressive MS.
To date, it is unclear why some people develop MS and others do not, but environmental and genetic factors may play a role. Because it is not entirely clear why MS occurs, it is no surprise that myths have arisen and persisted.

Coming Soon: 31 Days of MS 5 (6)
Multiple Sclerosis News Today is excited to announce a new initiative called “31 Days of MS,” in recognition of Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month in March. We will feature a range of stories from people in the MS community, from patients to caregivers to family members.
The goal of this project is to feature a member of the MS community every day in March. This is a space for individuals to write about their experience with a particular topic, experience, or theme, and how MS has influenced that.
Follow us on Facebook and Instagram for more information and updates on this initiative. #31DaysofMS
