With new rapid COVID testing machines, St Law Cty Board of Health prez doesn t think mass testing event needed

Saturday, December 19, 2020 - 7:12 am BY ANDY GARDNER North Country This Week CANTON St. Lawrence County s Board of Health president says he does not believe there is a need for a mass testing event in the county. Dr. Andrew Williams spoke at the Monday, Dec. 14 Board of Legislators Services Committee meeting in response to an idea that Legislator Margaret Haggard, D-Potsdam brought up at the December full board meeting. Dr. Williams said the Rheonix rapid-testing machines that can give same-day COVID-19 results nullifies the need for a mass testing event. I don t really feel like there s a role for a mass testing site. We have the capacity. We have the availability. We have the excellent turnaround times. And the cost should not be an obstacle, the doctor said. We have the ability to do nearly 500 tests per day at St. Lawrence Health System. Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center is also using Rheonix machines.

Tuesday, December 15, 2020 - 6:08 am BY ANDY GARDNER North Country This Week CANTON Even though the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines are expected to arrive in St. Lawrence County by the end of the week, keeping the coronavirus at bay will still require people to practice daily preventative measures. Dr. Andrew Williams, St. Lawrence County Board of Health president, made the comment during the Monday, Dec. 14 Board of Legislators Services Committee meeting. Does this mean the pandemic is over? I think the important message is that getting back to normal . it s going to take all of our tools. People should absolutely get vaccinated. But those Five Pillars can t go away at this point. It really is going to take all of those interventions.
