The Prince Georgeâs County Memorial Library System has strengthened its role as a national leader among public libraries with its efforts to serve the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Recognized with a 2020 Innovation Award from Urban Libraries Council and two new community engagement grants from Maryland Humanities and Zoobean, respectively, the libraryâs potential for having a positive impact in the community is expanding significantly.
The libraryâs work since March 2020 has focused on essential services and advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and anti-racism through programs, resources, and community engagement. Staff from all departments, the Board of Library Trustees, Friends groups, and the PGCMLS Foundation have each played a role in this effort, which aligns with the Libraryâs new vision: âWe provide a collaborative foundation within the community for all Prince Georgians to create the world they want to see.â

Tess Mayer could not have taken over leadership of the Berkeley Public Library at a more difficult time.
Mayer moved from Seattle to Berkeley in late September to take up the helm of an organization with 116 full-time equivalent employees, a $19 million budget funded by taxpayers, five branch locations, 110,000 library cardholders and more than 1.5 million moving parts. (The amount of material circulating.) Yet the new director of library services has had to work in an almost deserted office (at the central branch of the library), has not been able to even shake anyone’s hand and has only met most of her staff and the board members who hired her via Zoom because of COVID-19 social distancing requirements.

WEST NEWBURY â âIt goes without saying that this has been â and continues to be â an unusual year,â Town Manager Angus Jennings wrote in a letter inviting town boards to share their priorities for 2021.
The town hosted a virtual meeting for members to give them a better understanding of what others are working on and to provide a more coordinated approach to management of major projects and policy initiatives.
âThe goal setting was somewhat related to budget â and there were some items that came out of the discussion with potential budget implications â but the budget was not the driver,â Jennings stressed following the session.
