This was a great opportunity to help improve understanding of the role that DBS plays, and how faith organisations can access information to support safer recruitment within their faith centres. SFI and the Charity Commission will remain in contact with DBS, as we continue to build effective relationships in this area, and support the faith sector with safer recruitment in mind.
We also learned a lot about these different faith groups, and the ways in which they support their communities, which helped us to understand what works for them, and how they function.
As detailed in DBS’ 2020-25 strategy, keeping people informed and increasing public understanding of the work we do at DBS is one of DBS’ strategic objectives, and this type of work is a key part of meeting this objective over the next five years.
IMAMS from across Bradford have urged the district’s Muslim community to “not get complacent” and to be mindful of Covid-19 rules ahead of Eid celebrations this week. With lockdown restrictions easing - and Eid being observed this week, marking the end of Ramadan - imams have said that, although this is “a time for celebration and happiness”, people should still “protect themselves, each other and wider society” by sticking to the rules. When Eid is celebrated depends on a sighting of the moon, with this year’s festival expected to fall on either Thursday or Friday, according to some sources.
A 13-YEAR-OLD boy from Bradford is going above and beyond the call of duty by helping to deliver meals to elderly and vulnerable people in Manningham this Ramadan. Mohammed Habib, a student at Oasis Academy Lister Park, said that the holy month involves “so much more than just abstaining from food and drink”, and has encouraged others to help create a “sense of community” through charitable work. Habib has been working with the Volunteering Interfaith Programme (VIP) - run by Strengthening Faith Institutions in partnership with Age UK Bradford District - which has helped to distribute meals to people in need, regardless of their beliefs, through its Sharing Ramadan initiative.
The Sharing Ramadan project follows the success of a similar venture last year. Behind the scheme is the Keighley Markazi Jamia Masjid mosque, at Lawkholme, in conjunction with the Volunteering Interfaith Partnership (VIP). Mosque members are delivering freshly-cooked Ramadan platters to householders. VIP is run by Strengthening Faith Institutions, in partnership with Age UK Bradford District, to help people in need of support during the pandemic. Assistance ranges from wellbeing support and friendly phone chats to picking-up shopping and prescriptions, plus providing food. By working across communities, the venture also aims to improve relations between different faiths and cultures. Ali Akbar Chishti, a trustee of Keighley Markazi Jamia Masjid, said: “Ramadan is the month on the Islamic lunar calendar during which Muslims fast from the break of day to sunset, in order to learn discipline, generosity and empathy for the many people in the world who go hungry.
