Gov. Brian Kemp has signed a $27.2 billion state budget for the 2022 fiscal year in Georgia that restores most cuts made last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the remaining shortfalls expected to be covered by federal relief funds.
The budget, which takes effect July 1, devotes large amounts of spending to Georgia health care services and education, adding back more than half of the nearly $1 billion cut from public schools as part of 10% reductions instituted last year amid pandemic-driven revenue declines that began rebounding last summer.
Honors Program to become Morehead Honors College

A $10 million fundraising campaign, led by the UGA Foundation and its emeriti trustees to strengthen the University of Georgia’s Honors Program, will culminate in the naming of the Jere W. Morehead Honors College. Morehead serves as president of the University of Georgia, and the naming was approved by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents in a meeting on Tuesday, May 11.
“My fellow board members and I are delighted to play a role in this transformation at the University of Georgia,” said Sachin Shailendra, chair of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. “And my very good friend, Jere Morehead, has always remained dedicated to students and the state of Georgia. There is no one more deserving of this honor.”
School to enhance talent pipeline for in-demand industries; Yates to serve as dean
Supporting increased opportunities in emerging disciplines, the University of West Georgia announced today the establishment of the School of Communication, Film and Media, effective July 1.
UWG President Dr. Brendan Kelly said the creation of the new school at UWG, to be led by inaugural dean Dr. Brad Yates, is a significant marker of the university’s commitment to produce skilled talent for in-demand industries.
