Submitted by BlueNC on Sun, 04/11/2021 - 08:47 FIND WAYS TO EASE VOTING, NOT RESTRICT IT: This needless “Elections Integrity Act” bill demands mail-in ballots not only be cast by Election Day, but if mailed, must be RECEIVED no later than Election Day. It is a change that is not necessary, won’t make elections any more secure and simply erects another unnecessary impediment to casting a fair ballot and getting it counted. There was no problem to be fixed. Things worked better than ever! The quest should be for ways to get MORE people to vote and get MORE properly cast ballots counted. A legal vote legally cast on or before Election Day (including placed in the mail) should be counted. The current practice for receipt of mail-in ballots is basic common sense. To seek a political advantage, regardless of whether done to help Democrats or Republicans, under the guise that appointed elections officials or staff professionals acted improperly is disingenuous at best.

Author discusses his new book, a field guide for improving higher education

A: Let’s take those three goals one at a time. I was an undergraduate over 50 years ago. Back then, institutional quality was defined in terms of inputs to the educational process. The SAT scores of entering students, for example, and the qualifications of faculty, along with physical facilities such as the number of books in the library. SAT scores were important because student aptitudes (let’s say their intellectual capabilities) were assumed to be fixed, at least by the time they entered college. A first-year student would be good at math, or not, depending solely on those aptitudes. For many (but not all) faculty, educating students was a matter of providing content. Learning was the responsibility of the student, not the faculty member or institution.

Attorney general s office says USM may allow institutions to mandate vaccines

Credit: SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY The University System of Maryland may allow its member institutions to require students and staff to get vaccinated COVID-19, according to an opinion from Attorney General Brian Frosh s office. The Diamondback reported this week that the University of Maryland has asked the system to allow for mandatory vaccination. State Sen. Jim Rosapepe asked the attorney general s office to weigh in. In my view, if USM has sufficient evidence that mandatory vaccinations are reasonably required to protect the public health and safety, USM could legally mandate vaccinations, wrote Sandra Benson Brantley, counsel to the General Assembly. USM would likely have to provide reasonable accommodations for medical conditions or religious objections.
