When taken daily, pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, is a highly effective way to prevent HIV transmission, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Now a new study shows that implementing PrEP distribution within a community-based syringe services program gets the medication into the hands of women who inject drugs a population disproportionately impacted by HIV. BIRMINGHAM, Ala As COVID-19 cases continue to increase in Alabama, the University of Alabama at Birmingham recommends replacing traditional end-of-year, team-building receptions with creative virtual get-togethers and small, distanced gatherings.
For safety, virtual meetings are preferred. Unless a documented exception is approved, in-person gatherings are limited to 15 people indoors and 30 people outdoors; social distancing and masking are required in both instances.

The COVID-19 pandemic may accelerate the closures of rural hospitals that already began the year on the brink. With cases and hospitalization rates expected to continue growing through the winter months, hospitals that remain open in rural communities are under enormous financial pressure.
It’s a struggle particularly felt in the South. Of the 134 rural hospitals to close in the past decade, 50 have been in the Southern states, according to data from the Rural Health Research Program at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Often, the closures have occurred in communities laden with vulnerable populations that are more susceptible to the novel coronavirus, said Alan Morgan, the chief executive officer for the National Rural Hospital Association.

Sydney Clarke, recently crowned the Ministry of Sports’ 2020 Athlete of the Year, is looking forward to giving back to the community, which has helped so far in her success as a young tennis player.
Back home since November 13 from her freshman year as a member of the Blazers women’s tennis team at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Clarke has decided to stage a food and toy drive for the Bahamas Children’s Emergency Hostel.
Clarke, who celebrated her 19th birthday on November 18, will be at the National Tennis Centre from 4-6 pm on Tuesday, December 22.
