COVID show notes for Friday, May 14, 2021 –
Incident commander Karl Hagerman – COVID situation in Petersburg right now, still at low risk, four active cases, all travel related, people who have left Petersburg, returned here and since tested positive. They were symptomatic and were tested at the airport and at Petersburg Medical Center’s respiratory clinic. They have been directed to isolate and he believes the risk to festival-goers is low.
Petersburg still has a face covering mandate in place. He mentioned the Centers for Disease Control’s latest guidance on fully vaccinated people and masking.
Former Governor to Be University of Alaska Anchorage Chancellor

A former Republican governor of Alaska will become the next chancellor of the University of Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Public Media reported.
Sean Parnell, who served as governor for five years beginning in 2009, will take over as chancellor of the public university on June 12. Pat Pitney, interim chancellor of the University of Alaska system, said Parnell had support from a search committee as well as students.
“I believe Sean to be uniquely positioned to lead UAA in providing the programs that support Anchorage and Alaska’s workforce needs and economic growth, including innovative research to drive the state forward,” Pitney said in a statement.

Dr. Laurie Stuart has accepted the position of executive director at the Tyonek Tribal Conservation District. Stuart is an experienced nonprofit executive with more than 10 years of leadership roles in science education, conservation, and nonprofit management. She comes to TTCD after serving as a director at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, and has previously held leadership positions at the Pratt Museum in Homer and at the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward. Stuart earned her doctorate of education from the University of Missouri, with an emphasis on sustainability, social justice, and participatory methods in natural resource management. She also holds a master’s degree from the University of Alaska Anchorage. Stuart will be following TTCD’s founding executive director

The next leader of University of Alaska Anchorage has a controversial history with tribes.
The University of Alaska Anchorage announced former Gov. Sean Parnell as the new chancellor of the campus. Wednesday’s announcement means the university passed over the lone Indigenous candidate in Pearl Kiyawn Nageak Brower, one of eight finalists. Brower is the former president of the tribal college Ilisagvik in Utqiagvik.
“Sean brings passion for our mission, a deep commitment to Alaska and a desire for all Alaskans to have access to higher education,” university President Pat Pitney said in a statement.
