Print article It was only two years ago that the University of Alaska’s fortunes reached their lowest ebb in a generation. In February 2019, Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s controversial austerity budget had the institution facing a massive $130 million cut 40% of its state funding. The survival of NCAA sports didn’t look realistic; the complete shutdown of at least one of the system’s three main campuses looked like a serious possibility if not, all three campuses would be husks of their former selves.

Mt. Edgecumbe High School celebrated Gil Truitt Day on Tuesday (2-23-21) and honored the Tlingit elder and local historian with a plaque dedication and tribute. The holiday has been part of the school’s Founders Week celebrations for two years, but it’s particularly poignant this year, the first since the death of the former teacher and administrator last July.

Daniel Fenza was appointed president and chief operating officer of Chugach Alaska Corp., effective March 1, 2021. He will succeed
Sheri Buretta, who will remain Chugach’s chairman of the board and interim CEO. Fenza has a 20-year tenure with the corporation’s largest government contracting business, Chugach Government Solutions and most recently served as vice president of Business Intelligence and Innovation, during which he pioneered technology transformation efforts designed to reduce costs and streamline efficiencies for the organization. Prior to that, he advanced through a variety of operations and subsidiary president roles. He has a bachelor’s degree from University of Central Florida and an MBA from Florida Institute of Technology.
