Hobert Cleon Williams passed away on Friday, December 18, at age 80. He is survived by his wife Grace Williams of Heber Springs, sons Charles (Amanda) and Mark, two grandsons Ben and Charles, younger sister Wilba Williams Thompson. Preceded in death by older brother Billy Earl Williams.
Cleon grew up in Arkansas and Texas. With a history of hard work including paper boy and lawn mower starting at age 6, he eventually graduated high school in Crossett, Arkansas, and completed pre-dental coursework at Arkansas A&M (currently University of Arkansas at Monticello). From there he went on to dental school at Washington University in St. Louis. In that city he met Grace, originally from Hutchinson, Kansas, and shortly after his 1965 graduation they wed.
Arkansas journalism and politics lost a giant last week.
Charlotte Tillar Schexnayder, longtime editor and publisher of The Dumas Clarion and influential member of the Arkansas House of Representatives, died Dec. 11.
Charlotte was the first woman appointed to the Arkansas Board of Pardons and Parole, and she was the first female president of the Dumas Chamber of Commerce. She was also president of several associations for professional journalists, including the Arkansas Press Women, the Arkansas Press Association, the National Federation of Press Women, and the National Newspaper Association.
She won pretty much every accolade there is for a journalist, was inducted into the Arkansas Womenâs Hall of Fame, and was a close friend to Governor and President Bill Clinton. Charlotte made a difference, both in print and in politics, and she could never be replaced â she was truly one of a kind.
