The provost and the acting chancellor of the University of Arkansas sat down with students, staff and alumni Tuesday to discuss the decision surrounding the Sen. William Fulbright statue on campus.
Charles Robinson, UA provost, said the university supports students rights to free speech. The issue of monuments and statues and names is not an Arkansas issue alone. It s a national issue, Robinson said. We support you and your freedom of expression, particularly when you respect the rights of others to have that freedom.
Tyrah Jackson with the UA Black Student Caucus said Tuesday s town hall also brought ideas to the table for ways the university can support minority students and organizations on campus.

FAYETTEVILLE Monthly payments totaling $175,000 will be made to Joe Steinmetz, former chancellor of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, as part of an agreement for him to resign and retire from a UA tenured faculty appointment.
Steinmetz, 66, on June 17 announced he was stepping down as UA chancellor effective the next day. The announcement was made within hours of a University of Arkansas Board of Trustees meeting held to discuss an unspecified personnel matter.
