Similarly, Grinnell College, a private liberal arts college in Iowa, will require the vaccine for students next year, but the chair of the Iowa Board of Regents said that the state’s public universities will not.
Public universities in different states are also making different decisions. The University of Massachusetts campuses at Amherst, Boston and Lowell, along with nine other Massachusetts public universities, are all requiring vaccines for students this fall. The Colorado State University system is also mandating them, as is Washington State University.
Meanwhile, the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees voted this month not to include COVID-19 vaccines on its list of required immunizations for students. The board chair, John Compton, stressed personal freedom but strongly encouraged students and employees to consider getting a vaccine, according to a press release.

Today the National Science Board (NSB) announced that William S. Hammack is a recipient of its 2021 Public Service Award. Hammack is an engineer and author from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
NSB grants its Public Service Award to individuals and groups that have contributed substantially to increasing public understanding of science and engineering. NSB is recognizing Hammack for his outstanding skills as communicator. He has authored numerous books and produced hundreds of hours of radio and video segments that explain engineering in plain language to a wide variety of audiences worldwide. His YouTube channel has over a million subscribers and the videos that he has produced there have been viewed nearly seventy million times.

College of DuPage student Blerim Abdullai will gain crucial practical experience thanks to a U.S. Department of Energy internship at the prestigious Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Washington.
For 10 weeks this summer, Abdullai will work with artificial intelligence and develop a machine learning algorithm to give insight to the interactions of 4G and 5G networks.
