CHICAGO An Oak Lawn teen has been selected as a member of the Illinois High School Association 2020-21 All-State Academic Team. Marist High School senior Thomas Kavanaugh was chosen from a group that included hundreds of students throughout the state. The 26-member team includes 13 male and 13 female honorees and represents the IHSA s top academic honor.
Kavanaugh served as the captain of the Marist cross-country team and also competes in track and field in the spring. He is a member of the school s decorated math team. His list of potential colleges includes Marquette University, Vanderbilt University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Purdue University. He plans to major in finance or engineering. He was named a National Merit Finalist earlier this year.
GARYÂ â West Side seniors Paris and Parion Roberson are twins, but from their perspective, they couldn t be more different.
First off, they re fraternal twins, so it s not hard to distinguish one from the other. Paris stands 5-foot-11, while Parion is 6-3. When we were in middle school, people used to just think we were best friends. They didn t know we were twins, Parion said. And since I m taller, one of my friends actually thought I had flunked.
Parion couldn t help but laugh as he reflected on the incredulous looks some of his peers and teachers had when they discovered that he s not only related to Paris, but that they share the same birthday, Aug. 28, 2002.
VALPARAISOÂ â Breece Walls is a different player.
Last season, Valparaiso s starting point guard averaged 4.0 points per game, but this year the junior has taken on more of a scoring role for the Vikings. I think it s all about patience for me. That s been the key, Walls said. I m not trying not to force anything and just taking the opportunity when the opportunity comes.
Walls scored 16 points in a Class 4A Chesterton Sectional semifinal victory over Crown Point on March 5 and one day later he followed it up with another 16-point outing in the championship against Portage.
His steady offensive outputs helped Valparaiso clinch its 54th sectional title and back-to-back sectional crowns for the first time in 14 years.

Lockport native Bobby Gikas earned an Evans Scholarship for the class of 2017 and parlayed it into some recent fame at the University of Illinois.
He is the Illiniâs menâs basketball manager, a usually obscure position.Â
Because of COVID-19 concerns, the nationally ranked Illini are playing in near empty arenas with no bands or cheerleaders. So, Gikas provides some of the noise. He jumps around yelling encouragement to players and holds up signs. And he is getting noticed.
âHaving Bobby bring that juice, I think thatâs very important,â freshman player Andre Cubelo told the Champaign News-Gazette. âI love Bobby.â
