Leslie Appel: Helping animals through shelter outreach services

ITHACA, NY Leslie Appel knew before she even started kindergarten that she wanted to be an animal doctor. Growing up in Scarsdale, New York, other kids considered where they would apply to college. Even if her parents didn’t quite “get it” about vet school, they were really supportive of Leslie’s dream. Leslie applied to Cornell. Once on her chosen path, she was focused on learning everything she could so she could attend the best vet school to become the best veterinarian she could be. “As soon as I arrived in Ithaca, I fell in love with this area, this community,” she said. “I loved my time at Cornell and knew that I wanted to stay in Ithaca for my life and work.” After undergraduate graduation, Leslie fulfilled her lifetime dream, graduating from Cornell’s renowned College of Veterinary Medicine in 1994.

New owner new name for Lincoln veterinary office The Courier Lincoln Animal Hospital has a new name and a new owner. The new name is Miller’s Most Valued Pets Clinic that is owned and operated by Dr. Jennifer Miller. She is a 2002 graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine and practiced in Springfield, IL after graduation until starting with Dr. Phillip Gillen nearly six years ago. Miller comes from a small townand very much enjoys the feel of a “small town” clinic.  She grew up in Shelbyville, Illinois with her mom, dad, and two older brothers. She and her family had a small number of livestock and many pets over the years.

ANAHOLA, Kauai The suspicious deaths of three Hawaiian monk seals on Kauai beaches including one that officials believe was shot late last year highlight the dangers threatening the recovery of the endangered species. While the recent deaths remain under investigation, a new study found that human activity ranging from deliberate killings to fishing hooks was to blame for more than half of all known seal deaths in the islands over the past quarter century.

Dudek is pictured with Flip, his pet rabbit. Dunkirk Animal Clinic on Lakeshore Drive recently welcomed Dr. Mark Dudek as the new associate veterinarian. Dudek grew up in the Dunkirk/Fredonia area. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in biology from the State University of New York at Fredonia. He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine May 2020. He enjoys treating zoo companion animals and is very skilled in the area of small animal dentistry. His pets include his dog Angie, his rabbit Flip, and his hamster Goober. In his spare time he enjoys outdoor activities including hiking and kayaking.
