Jump ARCHES Spring Grants Focus on COVID-19 Solutions

Share this article Share this article PEORIA, Ill., April 14, 2021 /PRNewswire/  Seven research projects are sharing slightly more than $400,000 in funding through the Jump ARCHES research and development program to address challenges and expand on lessons learned about COVID-19 vaccinations and testing. The Jump ARCHES program is a partnership between OSF HealthCare and The Grainger College of Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (U of I) and its College of Medicine in Peoria. The funding supports research involving clinicians, engineers and social scientists to rapidly develop technologies and devices that could revolutionize medical training and health care delivery. A requirement of the grant applications was for solutions that could be deployed quickly, within four to six weeks. Investigators were also encouraged to consider how to best mitigate the impact of age, location, and social barriers in delivering quality health care to vulnerable population

Biz Herman for STAT When cardiologist Raymond Givens read the article in the Journal of the American Heart Association last year, it stopped him in his tracks. Written by a fellow cardiologist, it claimed educational affirmative action programs were promoting underprepared Black and Hispanic trainees who would not gain admission to top medical schools or become the best doctors. While the article was widely condemned as racist and error-filled and was swiftly retracted by the journal, its publication left Givens with a host of questions.

Plastic surgeons join Franciscan Physician Network Hammond Clinic

Two new plastic surgeons have joined Franciscan Physician Network Hammond Clinic. Dr. Lisa Whitty Bradley and Dr. Mark Grevious, who are both board-certified in both plastic and reconstructive surgery, are welcoming new patients at the clinic at 7905 Calumet Ave. in Munster, as well as via MyChart virtual visits because of the pandemic. Bradley studied Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit and completed her residency in general surgery at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Peoria. She did a fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the famed Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Her clinical interests include breast reduction, implant-based breast reconstruction, scar revision management, and benign and malignant skin lesion management.
