OWI suspect accused of attacking UI Police

A drunk driving suspect faces charges that he attacked University of Iowa Police. Arrest records indicate 32-year-old Justin Brown, a resident of the Iowa Lodge on The Coralville Strip, was having trouble driving out of the Iowa Memorial Union parking ramp just after 11:45 Saturday night. A concerned citizen called the Johnson County Joint Emergency Communication Center, and UI Police were dispatched to the scene. Brown allegedly shut off his 2007 Honda Odyssey and exited the vehicle as officers arrived. He was allegedly unable to complete field sobriety tests and breath testing. Police say Brown refused commands from officers and showed signs of intoxication. He allegedly fought with officers, including kicking at them when they tried to place him into a squad car. He allegedly continued fighting with offciers after arriving at UI Police headquarters on South Capitol Street, including breaking a phone inside the building as well as his own cellphone.

UI officials receive two sexual assault reports over the weekend

University of Iowa officials report receiving two sexual assault reports over the weekend. According to a school news release, UI officials received two reports of sexual assaults that occurred during the same incident early Saturday morning at an east side residence hall. Indications are the assaults were perpetrated by acquaintances. No more information has been released. If you believe a crime has been committed, UI officials encourage you to call the police at 911. UI Police investigating string of residence hall burglaries

University of Iowa Police are investigating a string of residence hall burglaries. According to a news release from the UI Department of Public Safety, UI Police have received three reports of potential burglaries occurring in three different residence halls between February 16 th and March 1 st. UI Police say they strongly encourage all residence hall occupants and those in the campus community to lock their doors at all times, even if they are only leaving their rooms for a short time. Residents are also encouraged to report suspicious activity immediately by calling 9-1-1. UI Police: IC Man sold cocaine by advertising on Snapchat

University of Iowa Police say that on December 9 th an undercover detective made contact with 20-year-old Trevion Gathright after he allegedly created a video on the popular social media app that advertised various illegal substances for sale. Gathright allegedly met with the undercover officer on the 1100 block of 2 nd Avenue after agreeing to sell the officer 3.5 grams of cocaine in exchange for $250. Gathright also allegedly arranged to sell two grams of cocaine to an undercover officer for $160 on November 12 th. That meeting was set up at Taco Bell on Highway 6 East. Letter: Those affected by police violence have had no voice in Iowa City s police reform planning

This was the question I was left with after Tuesday night’s Iowa City Council meeting, in which council approved a Law Enforcement Liaison Partnership Agreement with CommUnity and Foundation 2, organizations that provide crisis services to the local area. City Manager Geoff Fruin noted this agreement was based in his preliminary plan to reform the Iowa City Police Department (ICPD), leaving me with the added question of why this move is being made even before that plan has been submitted for public feedback, much less before council has formally approved it.
