The man charged with killing a state trooper Friday has long struggled with alcohol and had recently been cited for trespassing at a local bar, according to public documents and people who know him. Michael Thomas Lang was shot repeatedly by law enforcement officials and was listed in critical condition after surgery Saturday at University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, officials said. He has been charged with first-degree murder for Smith s death. A Grundy Center native, Lang was well known to local police, officials said Saturday. Susan Schmidt, 45, a bartender at Scotty’s Saloon, said she’s known Lang all of his life and that he has been a heavy drinker since high school.
