IOWA CITY, Iowa - A 13th Iowa inmate is dead from COVID-19.
A 58-year-old man, Dale Viers, was serving time at the Iowa State Penitentiary, and had been in prison for 25 years on a 1st Degree Kidnapping conviction.
He died early Sunday morning from COVID-19 and other preexisting conditions at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
The Iowa prison system experienced a systemwide outbreak of the virus in November, which coincided with a surge in general across the state.
Positive cases at state prisons have since subsided, with 91 reported early Tuesday morning.
Two staff members at Iowa prisons have died from COVID-19, one each at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women and the Clarinda Correctional Facility.

The Sunday death of an inmate at the Iowa State Penitentiary likely was due to COVID-19 complications and other preexisting medical conditions, according to the Iowa Department of Corrections.
Dale Dean Viers, 58, had been moved from the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City several days earlier for more advanced care as his medical condition began to worsen, state corrections officials said in a news release.

The legislative branch of government is rapidly moving to receive the coronavirus vaccine, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell received the shot on Friday, according to the Associated Press.

A week after Iowa received its first doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine, it has begun receiving thousands of doses of a second company s vaccine, and pharmacy teams will start vaccinating residents and staff of long-term care facilities next week, Gov. Kim Reynolds said Tuesday.
Reynolds noted at a news conference that because of a federal planning error, the state is receiving about 20% less vaccine than expected this month. But she said such complications are understandable. It has been and it will continue to be a monumental effort, she said. .There are bound to be some bumps in the road as we head down this new path.

Inmate from Black Hawk County dies from COVID
A man serving a life sentence for kidnapping in Black Hawk County has died.
The Iowa Department of Corrections says 58-year-old Dale Dean Viers died Sunday from likely complications related to COVID-19 and other preexisting medical conditions at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
Viers has been serving his sentence at the Iowa State Penitentiary. He was convicted of kidnapping a girl from a Waterloo street in 1994 and abusing her.
The Department of Corrections website reports 13 inmates have died of COVID.
