From USA TODAY Network and wire reports Alabama Montgomery: Before his death from COVID-19, former state senator Larry Dixon spoke to his wife of 53 years from his hospital bed and asked her to relay a warning. “Sweetheart, we messed up. We just dropped our guard,” Dr. David Thrasher, a pulmonologist and friend of Dixon, recalled him saying. Dixon, 78, died Friday from complications of COVID-19. Thrasher said his longtime friend had been mostly careful but may have contracted the virus after gathering with friends. “Larry has been conscientious with masks, doing everything right, social distancing since March … he made one slip-up,” Thrasher said. Twelfth Iowa inmate dies following COVID-19 outbreak in state prisons Des Moines Register A prisoner who was at the Iowa State Penitentiary has died, likely due to the COVID-19 complications and other preexisting medical conditions, according to the Iowa Department of Corrections. Mark Steven Bailey, 63, was pronounced dead at approximately 3:07 a.m. Thursday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, following several days of treatment there. Bailey had been serving a 20-year sentence for two convictions of second-degree robbery from Polk County. His sentence began on February 28, 2007. Bailey is the 12th Iowa inmate to die following the COVID-19 outbreak in state prisons and the first from the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison, according to the state s website.
