Isamu Akasaki, a Japanese scientist who shared a Nobel Prize in physics for the invention of blue light-emitting diodes, or LEDs, a long-lasting, energy-efficient technology that was hailed for its potential to improve the light by which hundreds of millions of people live, study and work, died April 1 at a hospital in Nagoya, Japan. He was 92. The cause was pneumonia, according to an announcement by Meijo University, where Dr. Akasaki had been a professor. He had also been associated with Nagoya University.
