WASHINGTON The delta variant of the coronavirus appears to cause more severe illness than earlier variants and spreads as easily as chickenpox, according to an internal federal health document that argues officials must “acknowledge the war has changed.”

The delta variant of the coronavirus, which first emerged in India, has spread across the US and is causing more severe illness than earlier variants, according to an internal US government document.
The document, a part of internal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) slide presentation, notes that the new Covid-19 variant spreads as easily as chickenpox, urging officials to “acknowledge the war has changed.”

The CDC reached this conclusion after looking at new, unpublished data from outside studies and outbreak investigations, the
Post reports. The research also suggests that people who are vaccinated against the coronavirus but become infected by the Delta variant are able to transmit the virus just as easily as people who are not vaccinated, and it s estimated that every week, there are 35,000 symptomatic infections among the 162 million Americans who are vaccinated.
