A team led by University of Texas at Arlington physicists is studying the impact of space weather on Earth, particularly solar-induced phenomena on our electrical power grids.
Yue Deng, UTA distinguished professor of physics, is principal investigator for the project, titled “Advances in numerical simulations for resolving multi-scale geomagnetic disturbances.” The work is being funded by a four-year, $652,409 grant from NASA through its Heliophysics Living With a Star (H-LWS) program. She is joined by Daniel Welling, assistant professor of physics, and Sheng Cheng, a research engineer scientist in Deng’s lab.
Starship is present on many campuses in the United States such as the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts and Bowling Green State University in Ohio where this millionth delivery took place. Outside of the United States, Starship is also present in Great Britain, Germany, Denmark and Estonia.
Within these first million deliveries, Starship transported 105,000 bottles of milk, 63,200 pizzas, 43,000 coffees and 40,000 bananas.
Starship is a small self-driving robot, which runs at pedestrian speed and crosses streets on crosswalks. An application is required to place an order and then unlock the robot upon delivery. The very first prototype dates from 2014 and the first deliveries from the end of 2015.

A complicated mix of good news and bad news makes any forecast for the coming months fuzzy, but scientists have one clear and sobering message: The pandemic is a long way from over.
The mutation-laden variants are on the move, and that includes one first identified in South Africa and confirmed in a Baltimore-area adult, Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, a Republican, said Saturday. It was the third known case in the United States of the variant, following two cases announced Thursday in South Carolina. The person in Maryland had no travel history, which is evidence of community transmission.
