One Drink a Day Raises Risk of Atrial Fibrillation

Researchers say even one alcoholic drink a day can increase your risk of atrial fibrillation. They add that the risk increases with each drink added to a person’s day. Experts say research is mixed on whether moderate consumption of alcohol has health benefits. Just one alcoholic drink a day can increase risk of atrial fibrillation (AFib). That’s the conclusion of a study published in the European Heart Journal. Researchers said they found that having an alcoholic drink every day was associated with a 16 percent increase in risk for atrial fibrillation over an average 14-year follow-up period when compared to people who didn’t drink.

Were Game of Thrones dire wolves real? Here s why the beasts went extinct, and they looked way different

Copy to Clipboard (Art by Mauricio Anton) The iconic and terrifying dire wolf, made famous in the television series ‘Game of Thrones , prowled through North America until about 11,000 years ago or perhaps more, after which they went extinct. They were once believed to be closely related to living wolves. But research suggests that this is not true. An international team sequenced the ancient DNA of five dire wolf sub-fossils from Wyoming, Idaho, Ohio and Tennessee, dating back to over 50,000 years ago. The collaboration of 49 researchers across

The French dubbed the decade after the 1918 flu the années folles the crazy years. Radio, movies, parties, fashion, dance and jazz flourished. Now, a full century later, the quarterly UCLA Anderson Forecast expects a similar redux. “With a vaccine and the release of pent-up demand, the next few years will be roaring as the economy accelerates,” wrote Leo Feler, a senior economist with the forecast. But for Jerry Kang, a professor of law and Asian-American Studies at UCLA, MLS’ interest in Korea is furthering another more important understanding. By providing the kind of role models Eric Choi had to search for as a boy, Kang said the league is opening up opportunities for another generation. “What we can imagine is often constrained by what we can see,” he said. “So for Korean American or Asian American kids growing up in Los Angeles, seeing a professional athlete who looks like them helps change what’s possible.”
