Tributes paid to prominent musician and teacher from Abertillery

Dr William Donald Hoskins MBE who has died aged 88 Tributes have been paid to a prominent musician from Abertillery who died has died aged 88. Dr William Donald Hoskins MBE was born in the Abertillery area in June 1932, the son of William and Olive Hoskins. He was delivered by the local midwife Granny Poore, who was paid two shilllings and sixpence (12.5p today). He attended nursery school on the mountain side near his home and accompanied his Aunt Annie Dowden to the Methodist Chapel every Sunday. He was a pupil of Six Bells Junior Mixed, obtaining a scholarship to Abertillery Grammar School. His parents were determined for Donald to pursue his dreams and bought a second-hand grand piano, with his piano lessons beginning at the age of seven years. Theory lessons were often at the local coal pit.

Yet on occasions such as Valentine’s day, we can often be misled into thinking that it consists solely in the swooning, star-crossed romance of falling deeply in love . But on reflection, love is far more complex. Indeed, arguably no word covers a wider range of feelings and experiences than love. So how can we ever define what love really is? In my new study, published in the Journal for the Theory of Social Analysis, I’ve made a start by searching the world’s languages for words relating to love that don’t exist in English.

In many ways, this past year could be seen as a breakthrough moment for the ambitious 32-year-old East Ender, who studied at the University of East London and The Cass, worked on the 2012 Olympics while at Allies and Morrison, and went on to found JA Projects in 2017 before being shortlisted to curate the British Pavilion at last year’s delayed Venice Architecture Biennale.

Mike Brooke Barbara Windsor opening a community hub in the Hackney Road. - Credit: LBTH Barbara Windsor, the most famous and loved East Ender in real life and on screen, has died at the age of 83.  The “Queen of the East End”, who was awarded a Damehood for services to charity and entertainment and an honorary doctorate from the University of East London, played the landlady of The Vic pub in the BBC soap EastEnders for several years and starred in many Carry On films.  A close friend of The Krays, she had humble beginnings in Shoreditch and returned to the Queen Victoria seamen’s rest centre in Limehouse when she opened an extension in 2011. She was also invited to open the first Tower Hamlets Council community hub in the Hackney Road in 2018.
