CUMBRIAN school pupils are being offered the chance to sample the world of work remotely thanks to an innovative new virtual work experience programme. The Cumbria Summer Term Insight Festival launches shortly and 13 organisations have volunteered to take part and offer 1,600 places to young people, aged 14 to 19, to help them shape their career choices. Young people are able to book onto a number of one day virtual work experience slots throughout June. The scheme is being organised by Speakers for Schools, founded in 2010 by ITV’s Political Editor Robert Peston. Some of those taking part in the Cumbria Summer Term Insight Festival are University of Cumbria, the NHS, Health Education England, Morgan Sindall, Nuclear Transport Solutions, Blackfell Photography and The Beggar’s Theatre.

Firms across Cumbria are set to benefit from a £5.7 million research and development support package.
Lancaster University and the University of Cumbria are launching the second phase of the Cumbria Innovations Platform, which will deliver technical and management expertise to the county’s SMEs, helping to commercialise new products and services.
The first phase, part-funded by the European Regional Development Agency, ran between 2017 and 2020 and helped almost 140 Cumbria enterprises.
It generated 63 collaborative research projects, and saw companies develop 41 new products.
It was also selected and showcased as an exemplar project by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
