“I realised that there’s a division in the Palmerston North community and that division is refugees are not able to integrate into our community for various reasons.” Fail contacted a friend who had connections within the Afghanistan community, started organising it and 10 months later the programme was up and running in March this year. She said they focused on refugees who needed help, were struggling to integrate or struggling at school. It was creating friendships too. The group raises money to help transport the students around the city and Fail wanted to expand the programme to other schools. Fail has previously been a UN world youth ambassador and at the start of this year went to a World Vision youth summit. She is also involved in organising the 40-hour famine at school.

Gin lover Hoani Holland said the event had a great relaxed atmosphere. “I’m not the biggest, fanciest (gin fan) one out there, but I do love to have a wee taste. “I’m only 21, so I haven’t been in the game too long, but I can definitely tell the difference between a good gin and a not so good gin.”
