Colorado business has seen record growth in some areas but is lagging in others, according to a report released May 5 by the University of Colorado Boulder and Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold.
The Quarterly Business and Economic Indicators report shows a record 44,740 new corporations, nonprofits and other entities filed initial documents with the Colorado Secretary of Stateâs Office in the first quarter of 2021.
The Quarterly Business and Economic Indicators report is prepared by the Leeds Business Research Division at CU Boulder in conjunction with the Colorado Secretary of Stateâs office.
First quarter filings tend to record the highest numbers, but the 29.2 percent increase from the previous quarter demonstrates a spike beyond trend growth. Year over year, new entity filings increase 32.2 percent in Q1.

Ford and BMW are betting a Colorado startup holds the secret to a better electric car battery.
Earlier this week, Solid Power, a Colorado startup, announced a $130 million investment led by the U.S and German automakers. CEO Doug Campbell said the company will use the money to add at least 60 jobs at its Louisville headquarters by the end of next year, doubling its current workforce.
In the long term, he hopes the money could help make Colorado a permanent link in the supply chain for electric cars.
It s a good thing the school year is almost over: The latest report from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment lists 58 new COVID-19 outbreaks at K-12 schools, the most in a single week since the department began releasing weekly outbreak lists over a year ago.
Of the 859 outbreaks currently under active investigation by the CDPHE, K-12 schools account for 251, or just over 29 percent of the total. That appears to be a record, too.
The CDPHE considers an entity an outbreak after two or more COVID-19 cases among residents, staffers or other people connected to a specific location are confirmed within a fourteen-day period, or two or more cases of respiratory illness with an onset of symptoms within a fourteen-day period are paired with at least one additional COVID-19 diagnosis. The vast majority of businesses and facilities identified as outbreaks remain open while working with the department to monitor symptoms and prevent future infections.
