SwRI-led PUNCH mission launches associate investigator program

E-Mail SAN ANTONIO April 27, 2021 The Polarimeter to UNify the Corona and Heliosphere (PUNCH) mission has selected four early career scientists as associate investigators to pursue solar science under the mentorship of senior PUNCH science team members. Southwest Research Institute is leading PUNCH, a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) mission that will integrate understanding of the Sun s corona, the outer atmosphere visible during total solar eclipses, with the solar wind filling the solar system. The solar wind, a supersonic stream of charged particles emitted by the Sun, fills the heliosphere, the bubble-like region of space encompassing our solar system. Its boundary, where the interstellar medium and solar wind pressures balance, ends the sphere of the Sun s influence.

Gigantic Flare on Proxima Centauri is Bad News For Aliens

Scientists detected one of the largest flares ever recorded in our galaxy and it came from our sun’s closest neighbor. A humongous flare erupted from Proxima Centauri and that could be bad news if there was any alien life near the star. Proxima Centauri is a red dwarf star that is located about 4.25 light-years away from us. It is quite small and dim, measuring in at just one-eighth of our sun’s mass. There are two planets orbiting the star that includes an Earth-like world called Proxima Centauri b that is located in the habitable zone which means it could possibly host life.
