The glacier of greatest concern

By Mike Lucibella April 21, 2021 Antarctica’s massive Thwaites Glacier is melting because of climate change, and a collapse of the glacier could raise sea levels significantly around the world. To glaciologists, it’s “the glacier of greatest concern” and the focus of the largest-ever joint U.S.-U.K. Antarctic field research program - the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration. The U.S. National Science Foundation and the U.K. Natural Environment Research Council have teamed up to send scientists to the remote region by land, sea and air to study every aspect of the glacier and better predict how it will impact the world’s coastlines in the coming decades and centuries.

Record-breaking flare from Sun s nearest neighbor

Carnegie Institution for Science Washington, DC– A team of astronomers including Carnegie’s Alycia Weinberger and former-Carnegie postdoc Meredith MacGregor, now an assistant professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, spotted an extreme outburst, or flare, from the Sun’s nearest neighbor–the star Proxima Centauri. Their work, which could help guide the search for life beyond our Solar System, is published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Proxima Centauri is a “red dwarf” with about one-eighth the mass of our Sun, which sits just four light-years, or almost 25 trillion miles, from the center of our Solar System and hosts at least two planets, one of which may look something like Earth.

Record-breaking flare erupts from neighboring star

Record-breaking flare erupts from neighboring star CNN 1 hr ago By Ashley Strickland, CNN © From NRAO/S. Dagnello This is an artist s illustration of the violent stellar flare from Proxima Centauri. A giant flare that is 100 times more powerful than any flare our sun has ever released has erupted from a nearby star, a new study says. Proxima Centauri is our sun s nearest stellar neighbor at 4 light-years, or 25 trillion miles, away. It s a small, dim red dwarf star with just an eighth of the sun s mass. And it s orbited by at least two planets, one of which may be Earth-like. The extreme flare was observed by a global team of astronomers on May 1, 2019, and it only lasted for about seven seconds. The team used five telescopes, both ground and space-based, to capture the moment.
