HOOOT app seeks to reduce sexual assaults on college campuses like Penn State

Since the return to Penn State for the spring semester, seven sexual assaults have been reported. While campus safety is a high priority for universities, the need for individual security is a must-have, according to some Penn State students. Max Young, founder of the HOOOT app and computer software engineering student at the University of Colorado Boulder, took this into his own hands and decided to try to create a solution. HOOOT is a personal safety app designed to help reduce sexual assaults on college campuses, according to Young. “One of my inspirations was the statistics for sexual assault — these crimes are just way too high on college campuses,” Young said. “[Over] 26% of women experience sexual assault while at school throughout four years, so that was a big influence on me.”

An intense wildfire season is shaping up for 2021

Now, after a historic 2020 wildfire season out West, already exceptionally parched conditions may have set the stage for another potent fire year in 2021.  Pretty much the entire Southwest is mired in serious levels of drought, including large swathes of fire-weary California in severe or extreme drought. The Golden State only received half of its average precipitation this winter. Vegetation is profoundly dry and fire-prone. Small, though ominous, early spring fires have recently started in the usually wet Santa Cruz Mountains, and that s after rare winter fires burned in Northern California this year.  A vigorous 2021 wildfire season isn t guaranteed. But if expectations of a dry, warmer-than-average summer pan out, the ingredients for large, uncontrolled wildfires will be present. Then, all that s needed are sparks.

UNM to play key role in NASA s Advanced Computational Center for Entry System Simulation: UNM Newsroom

Entry, descent, and landing technologies are critical to placing large payloads on other planets such as Mars. As a spacecraft enters an atmosphere of a planet such as Earth or Mars, collisions with the atmospheric atoms and molecules generate very high temperature in the leading edge of the entry vehicle. To protect from the extreme heat, it is necessary to cover the vehicle with a thermal protection system, which consists of lightweight tiles that resist heat. Accurate modeling and simulation of atmospheric entry systems are critical and must continue to improve as part of the design and planning of these missions.
