Digital world backslides into autocratisation

Digital world backslides into autocratisation published : 3 Mar 2021 at 04:00 4 - I love new technology and I often pick up the latest gadgets from sites like Kickstarter. Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder are one step closer to using humans as batteries. Not quite like the technology depicted in The Matrix, but still based on tapping into the thermoelectric energy generated by the body. In this case the energy will be used to power wearable devices, without the need for an additional battery. The target is to generate one volt per square centimetre of skin that can power fitness devices and other items. As usual with these stories, the technology represents potential and probably a decade away, by which time the robots will probably have taken over.

Dr Mateus answers teachers questions about ventilation and COVID-19 at Alabama rank-and-file meeting

Dr. Mateus answers teachers’ questions about ventilation and COVID-19 at Alabama rank-and-file meeting On February 27, the Alabama Educators Rank-and-File Safety Committee hosted an online meeting titled “The CDC vs. Science: What teachers, parents & students need to know.” The meeting was organized after the release of politically motivated guidelines on school reopenings by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on February 12. An Alabama public school teacher chaired the meeting, which was attended by educators from across that state as well as California, Georgia, Hawaii, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. UK Chemistry Research Leads to Breakthrough in Development of Thermoelectric Devices

of LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 3, 2021) A research study led by the University of Kentucky Department of Chemistry has discovered a new way to dramatically boost the performance of electrically conductive polymers. The discovery is considered a significant step forward in the development of organic thermoelectric devices, which can convert waste heat into useful electric energy.  Conductive polymers, which are electrically conductive plastics, have the potential to transform current electronic devices, such as smart watches, by powering the devices based on the user’s body heat. They are also attractive for converting waste heat from coal-fired power plants or heat from a car’s engine into electricity.
