Why do men publish more research papers than women? Motherhood plays key role

E-Mail Despite strides in family-leave offerings, and men taking a greater role in parenting, women in academia still experience about a 20% drop in productivity after having a child, while their male counterparts generally do not, according to new University of Colorado Boulder research. The study, published Feb. 24 in the journal Science Advances, suggests that persistent differences in parenting roles are the key reason that men tend to publish more research papers than women. Because publishing is closely linked to promotion, this gap could have long-term impacts on what academia looks like in the future. The researchers also found that while parental leave is critically important for women seeking faculty positions, 43% of institutions have no such policy.

Liberty Puzzles Aren t Your Average Games They re a Social Experience

Chris Wirth Isn’t Your Average Puzzle Maker The co-founder of Boulder s Liberty Puzzles sees his whimsical wares as a valuable social experience. And with the pandemic forcing people to stay home, sales are exploding.Aedan Hannon •   February 25, 2021 Chris Wirth’s puzzle-making journey may look familiar to those who have returned to puzzling during the pandemic. For years, he rarely touched the wooden edges of his mother’s prized Falls Puzzles, which were hand-cut during the 1930s. The antique jigsaws would come out on family vacations but disappear in the hustle of everyday life. On a trip to Puerto Vallarta in 2003, that would change. “I said out loud, ‘You know I bet if I could make and sell these for $100, there’d be a market for them,’” he recalls. “That was the light bulb going off. This is not just some parlor game. It’s a social experience.”

He always thought about them as a child and hoped that one day he would get to work with them maybe even help design them. It was in his aerospace dynamics class during his senior year of college at University of Colorado Boulder when he set a new goal: to navigate aircrafts in space. Buccino, who grew up in Steamboat Springs, earned his bachelor’s degree in 2012 and accepted an internship with NASA. He then took a full-time job at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab in California, working as a signal analysis engineer.
