University of Colorado music student Louis Saxton plays his cello at the makeshift memorial fence outside King Soopers supermarket on Table Mesa Drive, Monday, March 29, 2021. The memorial is for the 10 people killed at the store when a gunman opened fire on Monday, March 22, 2021.
Less than a day after the mass shooting in Boulder on March 22, the flowers began to arrive.
So did balloons, candles, signs, notes and stuffed toys. They arrived handheld by mourners looking to pay their respects to the ten lives lost at the grocery store. In the subsequent week, what began as a sparse collection of small bouquets blossomed into an emotional outpouring of grief with hundreds, if not thousands, of items marking a spot that may never be the same.

A sign encouraging the use of face coverings stands outside the History Colorado Center as traffic passes southbound on Broadway Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2020, in Denver.
On a sunny Tuesday, a man sits in his SUV in the parking lot of a Highlands Ranch big box store. Matt Dority carefully looks at the faces passing him by.
He explained what he was watching for.
“Are they wearing a mask? Do they have a mask, but it s not fitted correctly? Or did they just have no mask on at all?”
Dority is a volunteer, tracking mask use for Tri-County, the health department for Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties. The agency is the only one in Colorado to compile mask data throughout the pandemic. Dority, himself in a yellow mask of the surgical variety, keeps track via an app on his phone. He runs through what he’s seen so far.

Outside the University of Colorado Boulder’s Norlin Library, a normally busy area of campus, was quiet Tuesday, Sept 22, 2020. The campus shifted to a two-week all-online class schedule driven by climbing coronavirus infection rates.
Facing a budget shortfall of $218 million for this fiscal year, the University of Colorado system is proposing a 3 percent tuition increase to make up for lost revenue from lower enrollment rates and state funding cuts.
The proposed increase would be the first in three years and, if approved, would apply to all incoming in-state students. Those already enrolled on the Boulder campus are covered by the university’s tuition guarantee program, which freezes their tuition and mandatory fees for four years after enrollment.

In the middle of the University of Colorado, Boulder campus, there is a buffalo-shaped pool.
In years past, photos show students tanning by the poolside or playing an impromptu game of water volleyball. It was like a slice of spring break in Cancún made its way back to Colorado.
During the winter, the pool sits empty and unused. But due to the pandemic, it may stay that way for the rest of the school year. Most of the other amenities on CU’s campus will stay shut as well.
