PICS: Department celebrates Class of 2020 achievers

YOUNG people who rose above the challenges in their lives and received good matric results, were honoured at an event hosted by the Department of Social Development (DSD) yesterday.
The department celebrated top achievers who were in temporary safe care, child youth care centres, foster care and receiving child support grants.
Speaking during the event at Sibaya Casino in Durban, Social Development MEC Nonhlanhla Khoza said the department was proud of the pupils who had performed well in matric.
“We have children who were raised by foster parents, those who were once in conflict with the law, those who suffered from substance abuse, those who were abandoned by their parents, and those who lost their parents to HIV/Aids and were left to be raised by their grandparents.
UB Academics Celebrate Anthology of Botswana Women s Writing
Aprils 23 marks World Book and Copyright Day and University of Botswana academics, Professors Maitseo Bolaane and Connie Rapoo from Faculty of Humanities, will commemorate this day against the backdrop of a book they co-edited with former colleagues, Dr Leloba Molema and Dr Mary Lederer.
Published by University of KwaZulu Natal Press, Botswana Women Write, is a groundbreaking anthology of Botswana women s writing, which was launched at the Gaborone Book Festival in 2019. The book not only includes short stories, poetry, drama, and extracts from novels but also non-traditional sources such as letters, court reports, journalism, and even skipping rhymes.

Teaching and learning at VUT commenced through remote teaching in April 2021. There was an enrollment of 17975 students. End dates for the first semester and start dates for the second semester are currently awaiting approval. At the institutional level, the university has put in place measures to safeguard students and staff. On the return to work under the adjusted level 1 only 70% of staff are allowed on campus on a rotational basis.
Stellenbosch University
Classes for undergraduate students at Stellenbosch started on March 15. The 2021 registration process took place between January 18 and March 31. The initial undergraduate closing date was set for March 11 and was subsequently extended to March 26 to align with the national call. The current (unaudited) registration total is 32197. No case laws to guide court for sperm donor who wants access to child - counsel

Judgment was reserved in an application launched by a sperm donor to have access to his biological son after the childâs biological mother and her same-sex partner severed all ties with him.
The parties before the Gauteng High Court, Pretoria agreed that this case is a first of its nature in South African legal history. Judge Jody Kollapen was told by counsel for the sperm donor that the application addressed novel issues paving the way forward in law and that there are no existing case laws in this country to guide the court.

The number of Covid-19 patients at what was Durban s busiest private hospital since the start of the pandemic is “extremely low”.
A source told TimesLIVE that the last Covid-19 patient at St Augustine s Hospital was discharged on Thursday.
Netcare hospital division MD Jacques du Plessis said Covid-19 admissions at all the group s hospitals were low.
“We can confirm that the Covid-19 inpatient numbers are extremely low at present in most Netcare facilities. The situation is however fluid,” he said.
