Annoy your librarian : how to study without library access at university

Last modified on Sat 23 Jan 2021 05.23 EST Universities are following the latest government Covid guidance and, as a result, most libraries on campus are operating on an essential access only basis. Some are providing bookable, socially distanced study areas; others are offering click-and-collect services. With limited access to resources, students say they are struggling. First year psychology student Erin Carr has been unable to get hold of the mandatory reading for her course. “The online books have expiry dates of a few days and have a limited number of times they can be downloaded,” she says. “On top of this, I don’t have the required storage space on my device. It’s really frustrating.”

Littered face masks cause concern in Jesmond

As awareness of mask wearing to prevent the spread of coronavirus rises, Jesmond residents are finding an unusual issue associated with the pandemic: an excess of discarded masks. Before Christmas, JesmondLocal spent an hour walking along Osborne Road and Clayton Road, and found 22 discarded masks lying on the pavement. Some of the littered masks we found on Osborne Road and Clayton Road. Photo by Rachel Wang We found 5 masks on the 0.5-mile-long Clayton Road and 17 on the 1.3-mile-longs Osborne Road, which means there was one mask in every 0.1 miles on Clayton Road and one every 0.076 miles on Osborne Road. Blue dots show the locations where we found littered masks.

Actor Chris Farfouris lands TV and film roles whilst at Sunderland Uni

Sunderland University student Chris Farfouris at St Peter’s Campus Picture: DAVID WOOD A NORTH-EAST actor is looking forward to breaking into film and TV after landing two major roles. Chris Farfouris, 20, has landed a key character role in a new television drama set in Spain and the lead role in a new film, Shakespeare has Died, to be filmed on location in South America. Filming on both productions is postponed until later in the year due to coronavirus restrictions. Chris, who is from Greece but did a screen performance degree at the University of Sunderland, said: To be honest I’m still in shock that I landed both parts in such a short space of time, it’s like a dream come true. You almost have to build yourself up for rejection and be resilient as there is so much competition for these parts.”
