Royal Mail Turns to Drones for Parcel Delivery from Mainland UK to an Island

autoevolution 10 May 2021, 6:51 UTC · by 1 photo The company wants to turn to drones to send packages over to an island, all as part of out-of-sight and completely autonomous flights. Royal Mail has therefore worked together with a series of partners including DronePrep, Skyports, and the University of Southampton as part of a government-funded project whose purpose is to allow the delivery of medical equipment to remote communities. The first shipments will include personal protective equipment and testing kits that will be sent to the Isles of Scilly. The drones will carry packages that will tip the scales at up to 100 kilos (220 lbs), with the parcels to be dropped at the islands’ airport in St. Mary’s. Then, other smaller drones would come into play and pick up smaller packages that would be then flown to certain pre-defined points across the islands.

UK postal service tests autonomous drone deliveries to remote islands

May 10th, 2021 Chris Gorman / Royal Mail It s not just online and big-box retailers that are exploring deliveries by drone. Following in the footsteps of the Swiss Post, the UK s Royal Mail is the latest postal service to trial drone flights. The company has announced a landmark project to deliver packages including personal protective equipment, COVID testing kits and assorted mail to a UK island using an autonomous Uncrewed Aerial Vehicle (UAV).  As part of the government-backed project, a large drone will take off from the mainland and fly to the Scilly Isles (a remote archipelago off the Cornish coast in southwest England). The twin-engine UAV can carry up to 100kg of mail of all shapes and sizes, which the Royal Mail said is equivalent to a typical delivery round. Thereafter, a smaller vertical take-off and landing drone will be used to fly parcels between the islands to recipients.

Zero daily Covid deaths reported in England, Northern Ireland and Scotland

Last modified on Tue 11 May 2021 00.11 EDT England has recorded zero daily Covid deaths for the first time since July, in a situation welcomed by experts who said it reflected the impact of lockdowns and vaccination against the disease. Monday marked the first time since 30 July last year that no deaths within 28 days of positive Covid test were reported in England, following Monday 3 May’s report of a single death by the same metric. No deaths were recorded in Scotland or Northern Ireland on Monday. However, four Covid-related deaths were recorded in Wales. While experts cautioned that the figures were only one measure of Covid-related deaths, and were often affected by time lags in reporting, they said the declining death toll was promising.
