Union President Candidate Interview with Benjamin Dolbear

Union President Candidate Interview with Benjamin Dolbear Wessex Scene interviews Benjamin Dolbear, who is running for the role of Union President in the 2021 SUSU Leadership Elections. Why have you decided to run for the role of Union President? I am running for this role for three reasons. The first is that I have the experience to succeed in a leadership position. For the past three years, I have been an elected member of a parish council, spearheading a campaign to encourage the parish to declare a climate emergency. I have also successfully held elected positions in SUSU, including as Arts & Humanities Faculty Officer, during which I worked to improve the spaces at Avenue Campus. Secondly, I have the passion to make real social change. Last summer, I appeared on BBC Question Time to speak about race inequality in the UK and decolonising the school curriculum, and I have worked on media campaigns to secure British citizenship rights for Hong Kong citizens who are BNOs.

University of Southampton: Psychologists in reducing rough sleeping numbers during pandemic

Share The UK government’s recent annual rough sleeping snapshot showing that rough sleeping has fallen 43% in England since 2018 was welcome news for Dr Nick Maguire, Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Southampton. The data published by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) showed a reduction from 4,677 people sleeping rough in 2018 compared with 2,688 people estimated to be sleeping rough in autumn 2020 when the figures were captured. Further data published shows a continued downward trend in rough sleeping numbers over the winter – with the total number of people recorded as sleeping rough across the whole of England falling to 1,461 at the end of January. Housing Secretary, Robert Jenrick, attributes the fall to added government funding made through the ‘Everyone In’ project which launched at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic which he says has now supported 37,000 people into secure accommodation with more than 26,000 m

Union President Candidate Interview with Kendall Field-Pellow

Wessex Scene interview Kendall Field-Pellow, who is running for the role of Union President in the 2021 SUSU Leadership Elections. Why have you decided to run for the role of Union President? Right now, we need change. We won’t get it by putting our hopes and efforts in meaningless and endless cycles of Sabb elections – ‘entryism’ doesn’t work. I’m running to put alternative ideas across. What experience do you have that would make you an excellent fit for the role? I don’t want the role. It’s basically an internship so if I did want it I’d probably say whatever anyone would tell a grad-scheme employer.
