There are some instances in life where we take a different path from the initial course planned. Take, for instance, Franz Palisoc. As an architecture graduate from the University of Santo Tomas College of Architecture, many would assume that he would be pursuing a career in the particular course. But that’s not the case.
Instead, Palisoc is currently handling the marketing and management of their family business, Rona’s Garden Inc.
“Our family has been in the plant trade industry for decades, as forerunners in the industry. Rene, my grandfather and founder of the company, is one of the pioneers in the plant trade and landscaping industry as he is one of the founders of Bulacan Garden Corporation, which led the industry for many years,” Palisoc said.
For the first time, the Cultural Centre of the Philippines (CCP) did the nomination, deliberation, and awarding processes of its triennial Thirteen Artists Awards online. Over 80 artists have qualified, all have taken their part in contributing to the progress of Philippine contemporary art locally and internationally. But as tradition dictates, the award has been given to 13 artists only all deserving of such recognition and now more eager to continue showcasing their distinctive art. This year s awardees include Allan Balisi, Nice Buenaventura, Gino Bueza, Mars Bugaoan, Rocky Cajigan, Geloy Concepcion, Patrick Cruz, Ian Carlo Jaucian, KoloWn, Czar Kristoff, Lou Lim, Ryan Villamael, and Catherine Sarah Young.

Standards of beauty bombard us on the daily. But for Ayla Reyes, a 23-year-old photographer and graphic designer, beautiful is arbitrary and can be redefined to be more inclusive and diverse.
In her thesis photo collection, which she shared on Facebook, the University of Santo Tomas - College of Fine Arts and Design graduate recreated pieces of classical art – like Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Alexandro of Antioch’s Venus de Milo, Myron’s Discobolus, and Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring – to feature people with disabilities or features society may not consider ideal.
